Sri Subrahmanya Temple is situated about 300 kms from Bangalore,105 Kilometers (Km) away from Mangalore on Mangalore-Uppinangady-Shirady-Sakaleshpur road. The pilgrims going Subrahmanya will have to cross the Kumaradhara River, always with knee deep water. The pilgrims take their bath in this river and then proceed to the temple to have the lord's darshan.
It has been learnt from books and legends that Subrahmanya used to be called Kukke Pattana in the past.
Pilgrims often visit here to perform Sarpa Dosha nivaraka poojas. Sarpa samskara, Sarpa dosha parihara,Nagara prathishta,Ashlesha bali are few amongst the various poojas performed here.It is beleived that Sarpa dosha in one's life is caused to and individual when he/she knowingly or unknowingly have caused any harm to a sarpa( serpent). The sarpa dosha may also enter one's life if the harm has been caused by any of the individual's ancestors. Usually the sarpa samskara is performed by the head of the family ( in case he is a brahmin and performs the yearly ancestral ceremonies) and by the temple purohits themselves ( for non-brahmins on behalf of them).
As such, for accomodation there are good rooms provided by the temple trust and a few inns run by private people.
If you are travelling from Bangalore, you would experience a bad stretch of road after you cross sakleshpura. The ghat section in addition to bad roads create a chaos. Be extra careful if you are driving yourself on these roads for he first time. Elders shoud be cautious , for the humps, bends along the road may strain them even more.
Food is provided free of cost by the temple and there are certain timings for it. If you perform special poojas you would be entitled to breakfast also. Overall it is a nice experience.
